Should I use pick for animal I become tdg ?

I used both tumbe and pick but both are hard I found tumbe easer but pick has better sound any tips for it and can some one tell me what should I do to get the best sound on my squire fender the amp only has the knobs for base and treble what should I put it on (it has volume and the overdrive thing too (I use overdrive) ) and on the guitar how do I put the knob on that too I reply don't under stand shat it is for and and any tip on how to play it please I need it to get the song better (the reason I don't know what the know are for is that it my first guitar I learned a few thing about and some simple songs what a good head phone for it
