Would it be unfair to both men and women if women are always expecting men to be there to protect them?

What I mean is, it seems like many women are comfortable with being the damsels-in-distress types, versus learning the necessay skills to protect themselves when in danger. They always seem to wait for the man to be their savior. As a man, I must say I greatly admire any woman who is willing to learn how to empower herself. Having said that, it doesn't mean that I would stand idly by and let her get hurt if I was there when trouble came her way and I was the man in her life.
